- High
on your A list of things to do is a visit to the Grand
Canyon National Park. Its home to one of the worlds most outstanding
spectacles and is about 115 miles from Sedona. The canyon is 277 miles long and
averages 10 miles in width from rim to rim. Its beauty and size are awesome and
yet humbling . The south rim is open most of the year, but the north rim generally
is closed due to snow from late October to mid-May. If you have a car its
an easy drive, or if you prefer, there are local companies which offer coach rides
and helicopter tours from right here in Sedona!
- Another must see is the city of Jerome,
a wonderful arts community with about 500 residents, art galleries,
restaurants, shops and inns. Jerome is nestled dramatically into the side of Mingus Mountain
and was named after Eugene Jerome, a New York attorney and one of the organizers of the United Verde Copper Co. in 1883. It was a mining boomtown in the 1920 with about 15,000 in population, but became a ghost town when
the mines closed in 1953. In the 1960s and 1970s many young people
(some call them hippies!) moved in, and the town was reborn.
- The
Verde Canyon Railroad is located in Clarkdale about 25 miles from Sedona.
This popular excursion train follows the Verde River. The Verde Canyon is only
accessible by rail and is known as Arizonas other grand canyon. Billed
as Arizonas longest-running nature show, riders often spot bald eagles,
great blue herons, and other wildlife on the four hour trip. Reservations are
required and both first class and coach seats are available.
