| HOW DID SEDONA
GET ITS NAME? T. Carl Schnebly and his wife, Sedona, came to this area in 1901 when only five other families lived here. They built their house along the creek at the site of where the Los Abrigados resort is today. The house stood at the end of Munds Trail, which was along the route the farmers and ranchers used to transport cattle and goods to Flagstaff. Since the trip took several days, many stayed overnight at the Schnebly home. Carl saw a need for a store and a mail service so he applied to the government for a post office in 1902. He submitted two names:
The U. S. Government thought both of these names were too long for the cancellation stamp, so Carls brother, suggested that he name the town after his wife, Sedona. Carl thought it was a great idea, and the postmaster general liked it as well because it was short! |
