6 Tips for a Great Hike

  1. Get a Red Rock Pass ($5/day, $15/week or $20/year). With this pass, which you hang in your car, you are able to park at most trails in the National Forest. Passes can be purchased at the chamber of commerce, visitor centers and some trailheads.
  2. Always carry more water than you think you’ll need. Steep climbs during the day can cause dehydration sooner as you might think as the air is very dry.
  3. Wear lots of sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater and a hat. Remember, the elevations are high here, and there’s lots of bright sunlight.
  4. Layer clothes, carry food and a flashlight. Temperature changes occur frequently on hikes, and with the energy you are using, you’ll probably get hungry.
  5. Wear hiking boots! You’ll need good traction. Many trails involve some steep climbing and may have loose rocks.
  6. Follow trail etiquette. Stay on the designated trails and “bring out what you bring in”. Many trails are multi-use, so mountain bikes yield to hikers and horses; hikers yield to horses.
